Secrets to Glowing, Youthful Skin: My Top Tips & Products for Mature Skin

Want to know all my insider secrets for keeping mature skin looking hydrated and glowing? Get ready, because I'm sharing everything - my favorite ingredients, holy grail products that are also affordable, and tips for keeping skin nourished, smooth, and youthful. Let's dive in!

Alpha Hydroxy Acids for Smoother Skin Texture

As we age, skin cell turnover slows, leading to roughness and dullness. Glycolic acid is an AHA that can gently exfoliate to reveal fresher, smoother skin. It also boosts moisture retention, allowing moisturizers to be more effective. Apply a 5-10% glycolic acid treatment 2-3 nights a week. Start slow if you're new to AHAs. You must wear sunscreen during the day, as it makes skin sun-sensitive. But used properly, AHAs can totally retexturize lackluster mature skin!
Some great drugstore options are the Olay Regenerist Night Recovery Cream with Glycolic Acid, or the RoC Multi Correxion Revive + Glycolic Acid Night Serum. Apply to clean, dry skin and follow with a rich moisturizer. This combination will effectively exfoliate and hydrate your skin.

Boost Collagen with Vitamin C

One of the key issues with mature skin is collagen breakdown. This leads to lines, wrinkles and loss of firmness. Vitamin C is proven to stimulate collagen production, but the form matters. Look for stable derivatives like ascorbyl glucoside or tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. Well-formulated vitamin C serums applied daily can help ward off collagen decline.
Some great options are L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives Vitamin C Serum Treatment, or CeraVe Renewing Vitamin C Serum. Apply in the AM after cleansing to boost protection against daily environmental damage. Those fine lines will be diminished in no time!

Retinol for Smoother, Youthful Skin

Retinol is hands down one of THE most effective anti-aging ingredients. It accelerates cell turnover and stimulates collagen to reduce wrinkles and smooth skin texture. Start slowly just 2-3 nights a week and build tolerance. Use in the evening. And be careful about combining it with an AHA as this combination could irritate your skin.
The Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Facial Serum and Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Cream are excellent drugstore options. Rx tretinoin is stronger, but retinol offers similar smoothing results with less irritation if used properly.

Banish Breakouts with Salicylic Acid

Just because your skin is mature doesn't mean you can’t get breakouts! Salicylic acid is a BHA that can gently exfoliate pores and has antibacterial properties to combat acne. Look for leave-on salicylic acid treatments or moisturizers formulated for breakout-prone mature skin.
The CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser is formulated with 2% Salicylic Acid is both gentle and effective. For a leave-on treatment, Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is also a great product for banishing breakouts.

Brighten and Hydrate with Niacinamide-

Niacinamide is one of my favorite ingredients for mature skin! It hydrates, calms redness, evens tone, and minimizes dark spots. Look for it in serums, moisturizers and spot treatments. I love layering multiple niacinamide products to maximize benefits! If your skin is sensitive, stick to one product with niacinamide.
The Olay Regenerist Collagen Peptide 24 collection has excellent niacinamide moisturizers. Or try pairing The Ordinary's Niacinamide with their Alpha Arbutin for concentrated brightening power. Used consistently, your complexion will look remarkably clear and radiant!

Invest in Anti-Aging Peptides

Peptides are intriguing, though the research is still emerging. Some like Matrixyl 3000 may help stimulate collagen, smooth wrinkles, and improve elasticity over time. I’d say they're worth incorporating since they can help boost hydration in your skin.
The No7 Restore and Renew Face and Neck Multi-Action Serum combines Matrixyl 3000 with hydrating ingredients. I've also enjoyed the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Serum + Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid + Peptides. Nothing dramatic overnight, but peptides could amplify your anti-aging regimen.

SPF is Non-Negotiable

Sun protection does not become any less important as we age! Sunscreen is the number one product to combat further aging and skin damage. Look for broad spectrum SPF 30 at a minimum. Reapply every 2 hours of sun exposure. I love physical/mineral formulas for sensitive mature skin.
Some great options include, La Roche Posay Ultra Light Fluid Face Sunscreen, Cerave’s Hydrating Sunscreen, and Blue Lizard Sunscreens. Definitely don’t forget your SPF.

Generously Hydrate Day and Night

Moisture truly is the essence of youth. As we age, skin is less able to hold onto hydration. Quality moisturizers infused with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, peptides and other humectants are essential for both day and night. Look for formulas with added anti-aging benefits.
The Neutrogena Hydro Boost line has fantastic hyaluronic acid moisturizers. I also love the RoC Multi Correxion 5 in 1 Chest, Neck and Face Cream with glycolic acid and shea butter for overnight hydration. Quench dry skin and keep your fine lines at bay.

Be Gentle with the Fragile Eye Area

The skin around the eyes is thin and becomes even more delicate with age. Look for products specifically formulated for this area with ingredients like retinol, caffeine, niacinamide, and peptides to tackle dark circles, puffiness, wrinkles and lack of firmness.
The Burt's Bees Renewal Firming Eye Cream is a fab drugstore anti-aging eye cream. For serious concerns, the Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Eye Cream contains retinol to gently improve fine lines around the eye. Targeted creams can help in improving the appearance of tired and textured skin around the eyes.

Double Cleanse for Thorough Makeup Removal

Gently remove makeup, sunscreen and pollutants with a double cleanse. First use a balm or oil-based cleanser like e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Makeup Unscented Melting Cleansing Balm or DHC Deep Cleansing Oil. Follow with a mild water-based cleanser. No need for harsh scrubs or soaps that can strip mature skin.
Some great second cleanse options include Vanicream’s Gentle Facial Cleanser which is fragrance free or La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser. Opting for gentle formulas will allow you to effectively cleanse your skin of make-up and debris without overstripping it.

Prep Lips Before Lipstick

Deeply-etched lines can really show up on our lips as we age. Exfoliate flaky skin with a soft cloth or brush. Follow with lip treatments containing shea butter, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and SPF protection. Then apply your favorite matte or satin finish lipstick for a flawless look.
I love the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask and Burt's Bees Overnight Lip Treatment. They provide an extra boost of hydration to dry, parched lips.
Those are all my top tips and holy grail product recommendations for nurturing and protecting mature skin with drugstore products so it stays supple, clear and remarkably youthful. Let me know if you have any other questions! I'm here to help you glow confidently and beautifully at every age.
